The Wolf
and the Stray Dog
There
was once a poor old wolf who was always getting into trouble; but when
he met a stray dog, chased away from a home and was so thin that he was
just reduced to skin and bones from hunger the wolf was sure he could catch
him and was as happy as ever. "Now I'm going to make a meal of you," he
said. "Skinny as I am?" answered the dog, " You'd be better off fattening
me up a bit, first." The wolf thought this was a very good idea; but by
the time that the dog had become fat enough to eat, he had also become
strong enough to frighten the wolf away, just by barking and showing his
huge teeth.
